Early caries detection with KaVo DIAGNOcam

Intraoral sensors and 2D or 3D X-ray equipment often only show caries once they reach the dentine. KaVo DIAGNOcam is the perfect addition to traditional caries detection: It lets you detect approximal and occlusal caries much earlier and a lot more easily. Clear from distortions through plaque deposits or overlapping, view tooth structure and caries with impressive clarity — with no waiting or X-rays, and directly at the treatment station.

Caries diagnosis with light beams — light years ahead

With KaVo DIAGNOcam, light waves replace X-rays otherwise needed for caries detection,  giving you exceptional image quality and detail.

  • The light source at the head of the device illuminates  the tooth outwards from the root to the tooth surface.
  • A digital video camera shows the scene live  on the screen of your choice.
  • The tooth becomes a light conductor, making the tooth  structures visible: Any areas with caries or cracks that the light comes across on its way to the tooth surface are clearly demarcated and visibly darker.

Benefits include

  • Early diagnosis of occlusal, approximal,  smooth surface, and secondary caries and cracks.
  • Highly precise image quality, even without dental  precleaning.
  • Conclusive images and videos are visible immediately  for an increased acceptance of treatment plans.
  • Free from X-rays: For all patients,  all teeth and all procedures..
  • Automatic integration with common  software solutions.
  • Recording assistant shows the right position  for the best diagnosis images in the shortest possible time.
  • Intuitive to operate and a clear dental chart, including deciduous teeth.

Makes patient communication easier and improves case acceptance

One of the priceless benefits of KaVo DIAGNOcam is the clarity of the images. These can immediately be shown to patients on the screen to explain why treatment is required. You can also save these images to print out for patients and use during check-ups for long-term monitoring.

Intuitive use without training
The fact that KaVo DIAGNOcam is captivatingly simple to use will win over both you and your entire practice team in no time. And speaking of time: KaVo DIAGNOcam saves dentists and assistants time since it can be used directly at the treatment unit. Is there a lot of training involved? No. Is it complicated to use? No. Simply place the tip over a tooth and start the image or video recording. It’s that easy.

Conclusive images without the wait
KaVo DIAGNOcam images are available immediately without any waiting or any need to change rooms. Select the monitor which you want to display any details of the recordings for your patients. This way, you provide your patients with the best possible clarification, and the necessity of upcoming procedures can immediately be understood. Thanks to early diagnosis, there’s a significantly higher chance of retaining healthy teeth.

For any appointment, any patient, any teeth: Perfect for monitoring

KaVo DIAGNOcam can be used without dental cleaning. However, for regular, easy monitoring, we recommend use after each prophylaxis and check-up appointment. The ability to create simple, quick and clinically relevant recordings without X-rays convinces even critical patients, pregnant patients and the elderly.

Your entire practice team benefits from KaVo DIAGNOcam — as well as the patient:

  • Your dental assistants build up their expertise by carrying out a caries check at the end of each prophylaxis treatment. Documentation of the current situation and preparation for caries diagnosis by the dentist are carried out in a single step to save time.
  • The whole practice becomes more efficient when monitoring and early caries detection are combined.

Vibrant images for illuminating treatment plans to gain immediate acceptance.

The clearer the patient sees the dental situation, the clearer they see the need to undergo potential treatment. With the convincing strength of the recordings from KaVo DIAGNOcam, you can increase the acceptance of your treatment plans.

Just one look is enough for a second appointment

  • You can immediately demonstrate the need for treatment to your patient on the screen using the recordings.
  • You can show visually the treatment procedure for your patient using these recordings and previous images.
  • You can point out the caries occurrence or other findings and enlarge a certain area to make the lesion even more easy to recognise.

Early detection of caries – without X-ray radiation!

Please observe in the following images that they were created during a study in the dental clinic in Munich. As it had not been established at this time how well the DIAGNOcam really functions, additional X-ray images were created (to be on the safe side). According to the current state of knowledge, it is unnecessary to take X-ray pictures to diagnose caries. In some cases, however, it could still be necessary. Your dentist knows best and will discuss this individually with you.

Case 1

DIAGNOcam Kleingeräte

A The clinical situation show a caries-free premolar. With the DIAGNOcam, an enamel caries without involvement of the enamel-dentine border can be diagnosed on the mesial and distal surfaces (B). While the corresponding bitewing X-ray radiographs cannot be evaluated on the mesial surface based on the imaging conditions, the image signals an enamel caries on the distal surface (C). Alongside preventive support measures, caries monitoring is indicated with the help of the DIAGNOcam procedure (D).

Case 2

DIAGNOcam Kleingeräte

A The clinical examination of premolar 15, apart from occlusal brown discoloration, does not identify any carious process. DIAGNOcam image B, however, shows a distal broad shadow which has already reached the enamel-dentine border. Bitewing X-ray radiograph C signals a carious process up to the inner dentine half. Both diagnosed lesion expansions are confirmed after opening the carious process during filling treatment (D).

Case 3

DIAGNOcam Kleingeräte

A The visual examination of the occlusal surface of tooth 46 does not provide any definite evidence of the presence of discoloration or similar caused by caries. In DIAGNOcam image B, a shadow can be determined in the distal region of the central fissure, which is also imposed on X-ray image C as translucency. After opening the carious process (D), carious dentine can be seen.

Case 4

DiagnoCam_Fall4_1

A Tooth 37 shows an established occlusal carious lesion with several localised enamel breaks. Demineralisation can be seen in the region of the mesiobuccal cusp which is imposed on DIAGNOcam image B as a dark shadow. C The corresponding X-ray image shows an advanced dentine lesion. D After opening the carious process, the active lesion and an undermining caries expansion can be observed.

Case 5

DiagnoCam_Fall5_1

A The clinical examination of the approximal space between 74 and 75 demonstrates a carious process distal to 74. In DIAGNOcam image B, shadows can be seen mesial to 75 and distal to 74 with involvement of the enamel-dentine border. The very dark enamel layer and reduced transillumination due to resorption processes make diagnosing deciduous teeth difficult. In X-ray image C , a carious process with dentine involvement can be observed on both teeth.

Case 6

DiagnoCam_Fall6_1

A The expanded fissure sealant on tooth 36 is shown as a significantly demarcated opaque shadow in DIAGNOcam image B. At the mesiolingual cusp a composite filling can be seen in A, which is imposed on DIAGNOcam image B as a demarcated shadow.
